Find Blog Niche Markets Using ebay

Filed Under (Niche marketing, how to find a blog niche) by shaners on 09-03-2008

I realized after re-reading through some of the previous blog niche posts I thought that I might have glossed over or was a bit general about how to use ebay to find niche markets. The post is titled tips for finding a profitable niche market. The main idea around that post was using the ebay buy now feature to determine what people are buying so you can determine if you are entering a market or blog niche where people are spending money. So I figured I’d be a lot more detailed in this post. So you can add this to your blog niche marketing strategy.

In this post, you will learn how to use eBay to find your own profitable blog niche.

I’m not going to give any pre-amble or run up to the post just a straight tutorial. SO here goes:

Here’s how I personally use eBay Pulse to find niche markets in no time.

Log into your ebay account. You’ll need this for the niche search technique. So you’re on ebay pulse now right?

eBay Pulse main view

What you’re looking at is a list of popular searches, stores, and products. All of them niches. Broad niche markets at this point. Always best to start broad then narrow down the niche market. But it shows you what people are spending money on in these niches. Later in this niche finding post you’ll define these results into their more refined niches and sub-niches.

Other ebay pulse tools you should look at: largest stores, and most watched items.

Browse Ebay Pulse for a profitable Niche Market

I generally tend to research a niche market by how much money money people are willing to spend or are spending. You need to know this because you need to find a niche market where people are actually spending money. (obvious i know-but it needs to be said) Look for a category on ebay pulse where the minimum being spent is at least 100$$. No point developing a niche blog where people aren’t spending money.

So whats hot on ebay pulse right now?

ebay-pulse-hot-searches.jpg

Right now, The iphone is very hot. These lists are generated by ebay buyers so they change. Which is good because it literally gives you the pulse for the market. Ok so you’re not into Iphones or the any of the top tens what now? . Go for a lesser known niche market with stable demand. It works for me. And I know it will work for you. I personally skip this window, and scroll to the bottom of the page where it says “See more eBay Pulse Categories…” .

Now, you need to use your common sense (yeah, no magic formulas here) and go through some of the categories on the left column. This is where your marketing experience really count. And where you will hone your marketing expertise. You’ll need to spend some time and repeat the process which I’m going to teach you in a bit.

This is where you see if following your passion interest in a particular topic can pay off. In one of my other posts. I mentioned that a good way to start off a niche blog was by following what you are interested in or have a particular passion for.

For example, my personal hobby is home theater and home entertainment systems, and do I have a nice one, anyways. A previous search shows that there is lots of money is spent in the home entertainment systems market. Seems like everyone is hopping on the HDTV bandwagon these days, or just upgrading their systems. This creates an enormous niche market for both sellers and buyers. Go to yahoo answers, magazines.com or just your local book store magazine rack to check if your niche blog idea may have any market reach, or potential buyers.
eBay Pulse Popular Searches for Consumer electronics

ebay-consumer-electronics-home-theatre-systems.jpgSo I’m going to click on “Home Theater Systems” from the left column, which brings me even more categories on the right side. From this point, I’m going to choose “DVD and home theater” as my Broad search term.

Step 4 - Digging Deep

You’re at eBay Pulse Popular Searches. At this point, you want to go into its sub-niche-categories. SO I’m going to see what people want in the Home Theater Systems. When I click on the link, it shows top 10 searched terms in this particular market (screen shot on the left).

ebay-consumer-electronics-home-theatre-top10.jpgNumber 1 is bose, which is Good being that it’s a brand name. But number 2,3 ,5 and 9, are just a little too broad but good to know what people are looking for and this is very helpful, so I can use them. The other are brand names so I now know which brands are selling online in this category. Now that I have my brand name selections, I’m going to dig even deeper.

Step 5 - Going Even Deeper

Knowing that there are demands for certain brands in the binocular & telescope market, I’m going to find which models & accessories are in demand. In order to accomplish this, I’m going to use eBay’s advanced search tool. First though, I’m going to select “Bose” which will bring up items related to this term on the right.

The eBay advanced search

Click the “Advanced Search” link click it (Image below)

Then on the next page, you’ll find a little square check box on the second line - click it. (Image below)

eBay completed items search

Then press “Search”. You will see filtered search result.

Please sort by “Price: highest first”

ebay-sort-by-highest.jpg

looking at this search shows that the highest priced completed bose home entertainment theater system is $3,9999. Along with this you get alot of other searches returned for other product brand names, accessories, HDMI cable, logos, sub woofers etc etc. Some of which are selling in the $800- 2,000$, all of which are serious indicators that there’s money to be made in this niche.

Step 6 - Ready for Testing

Now, I have some healthy data in my hand, let’s review.

  • BOSE LIFESTYLE V30 SPEAKER SYSTEM BLACK
  • BOSE LIFESTYLE V20 SPEAKER SYSTEM BLACK HDMI
  • BOSE ACOUSTIC WAVE MUSIC SYSTEM AM/FM/CD
  • BOSE LIFESTYLE 18 HOME THEATER SYSTEM

Doing it like this you’ll get a pretty narrow niche. In this case, I could just go wide and choose home theater systems a my main niche topic, but if I am looking to go into this niche market to make money fast, I’m going to go narrow using top brands only. (this example was just looking at bose) Having access to this specific niche research, allows me to do a number of things. I can create a mini-site, product review site, or start a blog.

Other ways you might choose to make money in this niche

  1. Sell products through Amazon’s or eBay’s affiliate program.
  2. Google Adwords, or other PPC programs like Yahoo Publisher Network, or MSN AdCenter to advertise this product and collect the commission.
  3. Be an affiliate of the products you find this way

See how easy it is to find a profitable niche market. I’d be interested to know if any of you are considering using this niche info I just gave away.
