Squiddoo like humpty dumpty fell off of the wall

Filed Under (How to make money blogging) by shaners on 03-08-2007

This morning while doing more morning ritual. Checking stats, popular posts and comments. I was checking which of my posts are getting the most traffic.

I noticed that most of you like the Squidoo post and their problems, don’t worry I have been following that squidoo google fiasco.

humpty_dumpty.gifSo heres a follow up to that post: Google eats squidoo sushi and gets indigestion

As is typical in the blog world bad news has alot of vultures attached to it, but this is something that should be followed and this is why I am following.

Google just plain sucks ass. We all need it, because they dominate the Search world and thats where the majority of our organic traffic comes from, well mine at least. But on the other hand I think google is way too heavy handed with some websites.

Ok maybe squidoo could have been a little more diligent about how their product/service was being used. Kept tabs and tracked what was happening with their company. A.K.A jason Calcanis site getting porn spammed from Squidoo But I would say for the most part it was being used by… oh you know the average everyday Joe trying to squeeze a buck out of the net. Not Spamming the system for all it’s worth.

How bad has the squidoo carnage been?

Alexa_squidoo.jpgCheck this graph out. The slap came on or around July 7th 2007. But look at the meteoric rise up to that point. But whats of interest here is the big slump about mid june.

Here’s what Cam Balzer has to say about it along with some other disturbing trend graphs.

Squidoo’s cautionary tale continues to unfold. Many blogs are reporting major declines in its traffic after running a-foul of Google’s ranking algorithms. Here’s some data. Driving 65% of its traffic at the beginning of July 2007, Google now accounts for only 35%, according to Hitwise. Impact on Squidoo’s overall traffic has also been huge, with a 50% drop in July.
