Tips for finding a blog niche

How many of you bloggers out there stumped when it comes to finding a blog niche? or just cant seem to come up with a topic for a blog you’d even want to blog about?
I had the somewhat weird experience of having to explain to a friend of mine what a blog was. Funny thing was he is rather net savvy. spends alot of time surfing and doing what ever it is the average Joe does online. I gave him the simplest explanation possible but something that made total sense to him. Its a website that lets you add fresh new stuff on the fly, with out having to create new pages and upload them. And then people can then add their two cents about it in a comment form which then appears on the “website”.
So his next question as we were talking was how do you know what topic to have as a website (blog). Now this is where it can get a bit opinionated in the blogosphere and really it depends on your personal goals and what you’re out to do with the blog niche you decide upon.
From a very basic point of view. You could of course just go with what ever your personal interests are. Hobbies and the likes. I think you might be surprised by the number of blogging opportunities there in the “hobby and personal interest niche” I run a few blogs in those niches, and they’re fun to do. Mind you I haven’t updated one of them in a while. “Note to self”.
Just by way of example this friend of mine personal interests lay in ski-doing. This guy is a ski-do fanatic. I haven’t ever done any looking into the ski-do niche but I am sure he could monetize such a blog in any number of ways.
Again a blog now a days is or has become more of a website not in the traditional sense mind you but blogging platforms such as wordpress can be used in that way. On that note I recommend you pick up a copy of Caroline Middlebrooks how to develop money making niche sites with wordpress Her book which is free by the way is full of all or most of the information you’ll need to set your blog properly.
The other side of equation is this: If you actually want to make a lot of money with blogs you need to create blogs centered around
profitable topics, that is, topics with a lot of potential traffic. Obviously if you can combine the two, I recommend that you find the balance.
Find a topic that is both potentially PROFITABLE AND ENJOYABLE then you’ve got yourself a “match made in heaven!”
So now that I have said that what are some blog niches that you can enter into that may be both profitable and enjoyable. Emoms at home has probably the largest blog niche and topic idea list I have seen
Here’s a small sample of the Blog niches you have to choose from.

Getting back to the conversation I was having with a friend. We were at Chapters Because I was out to buy wordpress for dummies.
Now here is a little tip for you. If you’re stumped or have questions about the profitability potential for your niche. Go to a book store and see if there are books or magazines about or related somehow to the blog niche you’re looking at. If you can find books on the topic, then you know that there is obviously a demand and people are going to be interested.
If it’s in the book stands then you know there’s a profitability potential for your niche topic. Books stores would carry it if it doesn’t sell. Get the idea in this.
Once you have made you decision as to what direction you want to go with your blog niche. You may find that you have some kind of knowledge base in your chosen niche from which to produce quality content.
This makes YOU AN EXPERT in that niche. So what you’re looking at here is the Flagship method of blogging. Branding your self and topic in your niche as an expert.
This draws all kinds of traffic.
- Such as referral traffic ,
- in-links. Blog reviews.
- Organic traffic.
- Your topics get socal bookmarked.
- Potentially become news items. The list goes on.
Search Engines LOVE fresh, quality content. If your website or blog can produce fresh, quality content you will be rewarded with great Search Engine Rankings.
The equation is something like this:Popular Topic + Quality, Fresh Content = High Search Engine Rankings + Happy, Loyal Readers = Lots of Traffic To Your Website (blog)= $$$ =
From this vantage point you now have the basis for coming up with a niche blogging master plan for long term profit
This means you need to do 4 things:1) Find hot topics or niches with a lot of traffic potential
2) Constantly add quality, fresh content to your blog
3) Get lots of free traffic to your blog
4) Monetize the resulting traffic
Remember, there is no point in starting a blog unless it is geared towards an in demand, profitable topic. Remember too that it is not uncommon for blogs to outrank other websites competing for the same keywords because blogs regularly delivers fresh, quality content. Again this is just an opinion and I’ll leave it open for debate.
