Tips for finding a profitable blog niche

Filed Under (how to find a blog niche) by shaners on 23-02-2008

I wanted to let you in on a little tip for figuring out if your blog niche is going to be profitable. No let me re-state that. The first step to setting up a niche blog is obviously the research. But I feel it is being done ass backwards. Theres lots of talk of doing keyword research and yes you should, but not FIRST.

You want to make money online with your blog don’t you. Below is just another way of monetizing a blog.

My god I just realized that Ive compiled quite the series of posts around the how to find a blog niche topic.

At some point I think I’ll release it as a pdf for you guys.

ok let’s continue -

Though I suppose it really depends on what you’re trying to achieve with your blog. That being said.

The first thing you need to figure out is are people in your niche SPENDING MONEY ,buying what you want to sell. No secret there. But keyword research won’t tell you that. Keyword research only tells you what people are searching for not what people are buying. Which is all find and good. Do it any way you want, but if you want to set up a money making blog then this is how you figure out what people are buying. And then do the keyword research so you can optimize your blog for Search engine traffic.

Heres a little rule: Sell what is already being sold.

But the first thing you need to figure out is

  1. does your blog niche have potential buyers.
  2. Are they in your niche to buy stuff.
  3. What are people spending their money on in your chosen niche if any at all.

As a little example. What did you buy recently, what have other bought recently online, why did they buy it, where did they buy it from.

Ok I’ll use my girlfriend as an example. She loves shoes. What woman doesn’t? but the point is this, women love shoes, and shoes sell. How many shoe stores are there!! LOADS. WHY because people love shoes!! See what I am getting at.

Find out what people are spending their money on and sell more of it to them.

So how do you figure out what people are buying online?

You quite simply go to where people are spending money.!!! On a very basic level you could go to malls or stores and follow people around and see where theyre going. That will give a very basic idea on what people are willing to spend their money on. Then go to the internet and see if there are online stores that match who you stalked around the mall bought.

Another way of doing this is by going to ebay. ( any online auction site or merchant site-will do ie: Amazon.com)

And finding out what are the most popular products selling right now, made popular because are spending money on these items. These items are potential niches for you. I’ll say that again so you really get the point I am making here.

  • If they’re that popular then you know that people are spending money.
  • These are profitable niches.
  • By profitable I mean that people will spend money online in those niches.

Follow the picutres and you’ll see what I’m getting at.

Go to ebay.com and click the link in the picture.

ebayhome-buy.jpg

After you have clicked on that link you’ll be taken to this page. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the page.

and click that link in the picture.

ebaybuy-popular-products.jpg

Then you’ll be on this page

ebay-popular-products.jpg

This page will show all the most popular products that people are spending their money online on. Whats beautiful about this is that these are not only niches that you could create a blog around. I wrote a post a while back Use ebay to find a profitable blog niche

  • But you get titles of the most popular products,
  • model names and such that you could easily do some keyword research around, use as post or page titles etc etc etc.

But again the first step is to find out what people are buying online, what they’re willing to open their wallets for.

Then and only then do you do the keyword research. Doing it the other way will just leave you baffled and confused.

” I did my keyword research but people aren’t spending money or clicking my links” No wonder, you’re not promoting anything people want to buy!!!

I’ll follow this up with a post about doing the same selling digital products, and using amazon, and a few other places you can go to find profitable blog niches ideas
